Sciatica usually causes pain in the lower back and may extend to the leg to the toes. Occurs when the sciatic nerve is subject to irritation and pressure. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in our body we have, so it is a common cause of nerve pain. Sciatica occurs most often due to a herniated lumbar disc pressing on the nerve directly.

What usually leads to such problems include poor posture, sitting for long periods without exercise or stretching, and arthritis. As a matter of fact, a simple correction of posture can provide relief from sciatic nerve pain. Good posture is known to be a major preventive measure as well.

Sciatica causes numbness and burning throughout the lower body and is often associated with back pain, but are not necessarily connected. Sometimes the pain can be so intense that it can make walking a challenge. It is important to keep moving, albeit at a slow pace. Walking is the perfect exercise, low impact for those suffering from sciatica.

For the most part, sciatica can be easily diagnosed. A * general physical examination can determine if the pain you are experiencing is related to the sciatic nerve. The symptoms are different enough that sciatica highlights other issues that you may experience pain in the lower back. If the physical examination does not give a fairly clear picture, X-rays and other types of body scanners can show that the nerve has suffered from inflammation.

Here are some things you can do to relieve the pain:

  1. Use heat and cold. At the first signs of sciatic pain, use the ice – 10 minutes and 10 minutes of the first day. This reduces the inflammation that is applying pressure on the sciatic nerve. After the first day, start using a heating pad or taking a warm bath to relieve pain and relax muscles in the back. This is not a cure, but it feels very well and seems to reduce pain.
  2. There are many exercises that can help relax the muscles and the status of your back to help eliminate the pain of sciatica. These exercises have to be done regularly to notice an improvement, but often can lead to pain eventually goes away completely. Working with a therapist is also a great option because you design an exercise program for you that you can use at home for the long term.
  3. The use of ibuprofen or any other excess pain relievers. However, note that over-the-counter medications are not the solution to the problems of the sciatic nerve. It is important to consult a doctor for a solution that eliminates the pain and focus on preventing future episodes.
