Microsoft HD Photo, The Next Generation Image Format

Microsoft has launched a new image format that comes with higher compression ratio but around double quality compared to most popular JPEG image format. This next generation image format is known as Microsoft HD Photo format. Along with higher compression and better quality, it comes with many features for digital photography.

This new image format also popularly known as Windows Media Photo and comes with following features …

Multi-color format for printing and display.
Supports wide range of image encoding.
Well organized decoding for multiple resolutions and region.
Higher compression ratio by maintaining high quality output.

In assistance with Adobe Systems, Microsoft has released a set of plugins to manipulate HD images for the most popular and widely used image editing tool Adobe Photoshop. Currently this new image format specification is available with the new version of Vista, Windows Image Component and .NET Framework 3.0. Now, only time can tell that this new image format will replace JPEG in future or not. You can download HD Photo Specifications directly from this link.
