How to Change Virtual Memory of Windows System

July 6, 2009 | Author: ePIKI | Posted in Uncategorized

Basically virtual memory technology is using local disk space as memory, but the internal logic is much more than that. On Windows system a file named “pagefile.sys” is created on the root drive and this is used as virtual memory. The size of this file depends upon your system’s setting. Now, while running heavy applications, you often get a message like – your system is running under low virtual memory. In some situations system crashes after getting this message for several times. To get rid of this problem you can increase the virtual memory manually.

  • Go to control panel and open System.
  • On the System window, go to the tab Advanced.
  • Next, click the Setting button under the performance section.
  • Now go to the Advanced tab and click Change button under the virtual memory section.

  • Here you can simply change the size of virtual memory by selecting custom size option.

Before setting custom pagefile size, always make sure that your system drive has enough space. After changing the virtual memory restart your system if you are using XP and for Vista you need to restart if you are decreasing the size.
