If you’re looking to move your site from your current server to a new location, you must have to maintain few general factors as mentioned below. First of all, take a complete backup of your site including database. Take atleast 2/3 backup copies and place them on different locations including DVD. It would be easier for you to place all files on new server if you make an archive (including folder paths).

STEPS TO FOLLOW

  •  Try to use FTP programs like FileZilla for backup in lieu of using web interface.
  •  Gather information about your new host’s DNS servers.
  • Ask for the temporary URL on your new host so you can check everything all right before the site made a DNS change. Generally hosting provider gives you an URL with IP address.
  • If you don’t have control over your domain and your host provider controls the domain then must tell them not to change your DNS until you inform them to do so.
  • Place a notice on your site telling your visitors about this change. Unless there will be several problems.
  • If you have ecommerce site with CC/ Online Transaction ask your customers not to transfer funds during this period. You can also give periodic updates during the transfer process.
  • On the site moving day, try to schedule it at a time when site’s traffic is least. Backup again before you start moving the site, it will capture the latest data. Put a custom error page on your new host server with a small message about the move.
  • When the transfer is completed & site is in working condition the change name servers of you domain. You can check the status & working of site on new server through the temporary URL provided by your new hosting company. DNS change will effects after around 24-48 hours. So, you’ll get time to check the site entire site once more.
  • When the DNS change effects, you are ready and you site can be accessed with its name.
